Faced with North Korea, Trump’s diplomacy victim of its naivety

The extreme personalization of the negotiations between the United States and North Korea had been considered as the base of an unprecedented dynamic. It may have been the main reason for the failure in Hanoi on Thursday, February 28, when Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un separated without reaching agreement on any joint statement.

The first summit held in Singapore in June 2018 had already shown the limits of this framework. The day after this first historic meeting, the President of the United States had assured on his Twitter account that “there was no more North Korean nuclear threat”, only to discover later that both sides had a reading divergent from the denuclearization they had set themselves as an objective – limited to North Korea or extended to US reciprocity measures, as requested by Pyongyang.
